Save 15 percent on Disney+ streaming gift cards today only

Streaming services are expensive, especially with many companies cracking down on sharing passwords. Gift cards are a great way to help someone save some money, especially when you don't even have to pay full price. For today only, Best Buy is running a 15 percent off sale on Disney+ gift cards. That's right: currently, you can get a Disney+ gift card worth $25 for $21.25, $50 for 42.50, and $100 for $85. The gift cards are only good for monthly subscriptions to Disney+ in the United States that are billed by Disney (rather than a third party). They also applies to the Disney Bundle, which includes Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+. A typical Disney+ subscription's price varies by tier. Disney+ Basic (with ads) is $8 per month, while an ad-free viewing experience is $14 per month. Disney+ bundles range in price from $10 monthly for the Disney Bundle Duo Basic (Disney+ and Hulu with ads) to $24 monthly for the Disney Bundle Trio Premium (Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ with no ads).  Follow ...

This vacuum robot dog can find and suck up trash with its feet

Cigarette butts pose a huge risk to the world’s oceans and can be a pain to clean up by hand especially on public spaces like beaches. A group of Italian scientists have built a quadruped robot that can identify litter and pick up the smaller bits with its leg mounted vacuums. VERO, the vacuum equipped quadruped robot, is a four-legged device designed to look for and clean up litter on a variety of terrains. VERO was designed and built by a team of researchers from the Dynamic Legged Systems lab at the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, according to USA Today. The group published a paper back in April on VERO’s development and effectiveness in the Journal of Field Robotics. The research paper states that cigarette butts are a serious concern. Discarded butts release toxic chemicals and microplastics into the ocean as they break down. It’s also the “second most common undisposed waste worldwide, in terrains that are hard to reach for wheeled and tracked robots.” VERO is designed...

Leonardo.ai’s technology and Phoenix foundation model will also be “rapidly” integrated into Canva’s existing suite of Magic Studio products, such as the Magic Media image and video generator. Elon Musk posts deepfake of Kamala Harris that violates X policy

Image
Photo by Kenny Holston-Pool / Getty Images X owner Elon Musk shared a deepfake video spoofing a campaign ad for Vice President Kamala Harris. It appears to violate the platform’s own policies against synthetic and manipulated media. The video Musk shared on Friday alters a recent campaign video Harris released, one that makes it sound like the presidential candidate said things she didn’t. The manipulated clip has Harris saying things like she is “the ultimate diversity hire” and that she “had four years under the tutelage of the ultimate deep state puppet, a wonderful mentor, Joe Biden.” The original account that had posted the video labeled it, “Kamala Harris Campaign Ad PARODY,” a disclaimer that might prevent it from violating X’s policies. But this context did not appear in Musk’s repost. Instead, Musk’s post simply showed the video, adding his own commentary: “This is amazing,” with a laughing emoji. It’s just the latest example of how AI-altered media could play a role i...

Google’s first cross-device sharing features for Android now rolling out

Image
Google is rolling out the two handy features first announced at I/O in May: Call casting and internet sharing. They're the first wave of the company's new "Cross-device services" that make it easier to hop between Android devices, 9to5Google reported.  According to Google's help page, Call casting lets you switch video calls "from your device to another device with the same Google Account... for example, a video calling app may let you cast your call to another device and the app will show a list of your nearby devices that you can cast to." At the moment, this only works for Google Meet; to use it, you select the Cast button that looks exactly like the existing Cast/Chromecast icon).  Google Internet sharing, meanwhile, lets you "automatically share hotspot access with your own devices," Google wrote. It works with Chromebooks and Android devices signed into your Google Account, provided you have Bluetooth and device location enabled. It doesn...

According to Amazon, the new season will be focused on Sauron’s return. “Cast out by Galadriel, without an army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will,” the streamer explains. It looks like this season will also be a good one for fans of fantasy monsters: the likes of the giant spider Shelob, shape-shifting Barrow-wights, and a Sea Worm will make an appearance. OpenAI unveils SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine

Image
OpenAI on Thursday announced a new AI-powered search engine prototype called SearchGPT. The move marks the company’s entry into a competitive search engine market dominated by Google for decades. On its website, OpenAI described SearchGPT as “a temporary prototype of new AI search features that give you fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources.” The company plans to test out the product with 10,000 initial users and then roll it into ChatGPT after gathering feedback. The launch of SearchGPT comes amid growing competition in AI-powered search. Google, the world’s dominant search engine, recently began integrating AI capabilities into its platform. Other startups like the Jeff Bezos-backed Perplexity have also aimed to take on Google and have marketed themselves as “answer engines” that use AI to summarize the internet.  The rise of AI-powered search engines has been controversial. Last month, Perplexity faced criticism for summarizing stories from Forbes and Wired without...

Meta takes down 63,000 Instagram accounts linked to extortion scams

Meta has taken down tens of thousands of Instagram accounts from Nigeria as part of a massive crackdown on sextortion scams. The accounts primarily targeted adult men in the United States, but some also targeted minors, Meta said in an update. The takedowns are part of a larger effort by Meta to combat sextortion scams on its platform in recent months. Earlier this year, the company added a safety feature in Instagram messages to automatically detect nudity and warn users about potential blackmail scams. The company also provides in-app resources and safety tips about such scams. According to Meta, the recent takedowns included 2,500 accounts that were linked to a group of about 20 people who worked together to carry out sextortion scams. The company also took down thousands of accounts and groups on Facebook that provided tips and other advice, including scripts and fake images, for would-be sextortionists. Those accounts were linked to the Yahoo Boys, a group of “loosely organized cy...

Respawn is walking back its unpopular changes to the Apex Legends battle pass

Respawn Entertainment is bringing back the option to buy Apex Legends battle passes with in-game currency. "You've spoken, and we've listened," the company said. The developer drew player outrage and a sweep of review-bombing earlier this month after it announced a new approach to the game's reward system. The original announcement was convoluted, but the gist of what frustrated the Apex community was that players would no longer be able to use in-game currency to access an upgraded version of the battle pass. People earn Apex Coins by playing, and under the original model, serious fans could easily earn enough over the course of one battle pass to pay for the next season's. Today, Respawn said it would return the option to pay 950 Apex Coins (about $10) to unlock the Premium battle pass tier. And with 1,300 Apex Coins available at that tier, this segment of the battle pass experience has mostly reverted to the old model. Players will be able to unlock the pre...

Modders made a tiny Nintendo Wii that doubles as a keychain

The Nintendo Wii was a bona-fide cultural juggernaut, with over 100 million consoles sold during its lifespan. It was never the biggest console in the world, with a size approximating a paperback book. Modders, however, have managed to shrink the Wii’s footprint way down. They made a functional console that’s no bigger than a keychain, as reported by Time Extension. As a matter of fact, it actually doubles as a keychain. The appropriately-named Nintendo Kawaii is a teensy-weensy Wii that lacks some of the bells and whistles of the original, but it works and can run games from that generation. It’s also quite fetching, with a CNC’d aluminum metal unibody. There are magnetic pogo pin connectors for power, AV support and controllers. There’s also a custom dock that offers support for four Gamecube controllers, which is a must for certain fighting games that rhyme with Shmooper Smash Bros. @YveltalGriffin and I have been cooking up something special over the past year or so and we are now ...

NBA TV rights go to ESPN, NBC and Amazon as TNT is rejected

The NBA and WNBA have inked deals for where games will be aired and streamed for the next eleven years. The NBA deals run from the 2025-2026 season through the 2035-2036 season. For the WNBA, the agreement covers the 2026 through 2036 seasons. Pro basketball has been an ESPN mainstay for years and that will continue, with the Disney-owned network remaining the primary media rights owner for both leagues. ESPN will be the exclusive home for the NBA finals for all eleven years of the new deal, as well as five out of the eleven years of the WNBA finals. The games covered by ESPN's deal will be part of the sports network's direct-to-consumer platform and a package of NBA and WNBA games will also be made available to stream on Disney+ in select international markets. While the bulk of the games will go to ESPN, basketball is going to have more of a streaming presence thanks to two new partnerships. NBC and Peacock will have access to 100 NBA national games during each regular season...

New PS5 update makes it easier to join multiplayer games

Anyone with a PlayStation 5 should now have a smoother option for connecting with other gamers. Sony has officially rolled out a system software update, allowing you to create shareable links inviting others to a multiplayer game. The company first announced the feature in early May. The new PS5 update works by providing you with a link in the app that can be shared with anyone, even if you aren't friends on the Playstation Network. A QR code pops up alongside the link, though Sony warns you might have to update a few of your games for the new feature to work. One of the best things about this tool is the invite isn't immediately time-sensitive, so the link will still drop the recipient into your game 10 or 30 minutes from when its sent as long as you're still playing. If you send the link on Discord, a widget should appear to say if people are still playing or have dropped off.  Alongside the new share method is another update that lets you open Game Help action cards thro...

Outage caused by CrowdStrike’s disastrous update affected 8.5 million devices

The global outage caused by a faulty update from cybersecurity provider CrowdStrike on Friday affected some 8.5 million Windows devices, Microsoft said in a blog post. The update triggered a blue screen of death, bringing systems used by hospitals, airlines, banks and other major services temporarily to a standstill. Only machines running Windows were affected. While the issue was mostly resolved by Friday afternoon, Microsoft and CrowdStrike are still dealing with the fallout. In the blog post on Saturday, Microsoft’s VP of Enterprise and OS Security, David Weston, wrote that the company is working with CrowdStrike to “develop a scalable solution that will help Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure accelerate a fix for CrowdStrike’s faulty update.” Microsoft has also called in help from Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). CrowdStrike said in its own blog post on Saturday that the update — a sensor configuration update — “was designed to target newly observed, malicio...

.45 PARABELLUM BLOODHOUND is a cyberpunk RPG by the developer of VA-11 HALL-A

Sukeban Games is working on what it describes as a "cyberpunk active time action" game with a battle system that's similar to Parasite Eve. In a blog post, Chris of Sukeban has officially announced .45 PARABELLUM BLOODHOUND, featuring a mercenary named Reila Mikazuchi as its protagonist. Enemies can attack you from anywhere while you're exploring environments in the game, and you'll have to dodge and wait for an action bar to fill before you can launch a counterattack. The action bar fills at a speed based on your character and weapon stats, so the stronger you get, the faster you can fight back.  While the announcement doesn't have a in-depth explanation of the game's plot, Chris describes its story as follows: "You play as Reila Mikazuchi; a washed out mercenary whose glory days are long gone. In a last attempt at grabbing life by the horns she decides to go back to the life, only to realize the real enemy isn’t in front of her gun." The indie ...

CrowdStrike’s faulty update crashed 8.5 million Windows devices, says Microsoft

Image
Image: The Verge CrowdStrike’s faulty update caused a worldwide tech disaster that affected 8.5 million Windows devices on Friday, according to Microsoft. Microsoft says that’s “less than one percent of all Windows machines,” but it was enough to create problems for retailers, banks, airlines, and many other industries, as well as everyone who relies on them. Separately, the technical breakdown from CrowdStrike released Friday explains more about what happened and why so many systems were affected all at once. CrowdStrike’s breakdown explains the configuration file that was at the heart of the issue: The configuration files mentioned above are referred to as “Channel Files” and are part of the behavioral protection mechanisms used by the Falcon sensor. Updates to Channel Files are a normal part of the sensor’s operation and occur several times a day in response to novel tactics, techniques, and procedures discovered by CrowdStrike. This is not a new process; the architecture ha...

It could take a while to fully resolve these Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors, with the standard fix requiring a trip into Safe Mode, but Microsoft is now advising that rebooting systems affected by the CrowdStrike glitch up to 15 times could get them back up and running. CrowdStrike, which is a cybersecurity firm based in the US, said on Friday that a faulty update was the culprit, not a “security incident or cyberattack,” according to a post on X by CEO George Kurtz. Banks, airlines, TV broadcasters, supermarkets, and even Starbucks had systems crashed due to the problem. Thousands of flights have been delayed or ...

Ubisoft delays its Rainbow Six and Division mobile games until at least April 2025

Ubisoft has released its latest earnings report and while there wasn't a ton of major news, there's a disappointing update for those who have been waiting on mobile versions of the Rainbow Six and The Division franchises. The company says that the Rainbow Six Mobile and The Division Resurgence development teams need more time to "deliver on expectations" amid "a demanding yet very large market." As such, both titles are no longer expected to debut in the publisher's current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2025. That means yet another delay for Rainbow Six Mobile, which was initially supposed to arrive in 2022. The Division Resurgence had been expected to debut last year. On an earnings call with investors, Ubisoft noted that "it's very difficult to define a set date" when asked why it was delaying the games now, with over eight months of the fiscal year to go. Executives said that Ubisoft wants the two titles to last forever and that t...

Prime Day is over, but Apple’s AirPods Pro are still cheaper than ever

Amazon Prime Day 2024 has come and gone, but thankfully, some sales still linger. One of the best deals to shop right now is an all-time low price on Apple's second-generation AirPods Pro. The earbuds first dropped to $169 from $249 in an early Prime Day deal, and you can still grab them for 32 percent off.  Apple released its second-gen AirPods Pro in 2022, but they're still the newest model on the market. At the time, we gave them an 88 in our review thanks to solid noise cancellation and stellar transparency mode — courtesy of their H2 chip. They're also our choice of 2024's best wireless earbuds for an iPhone, with simple touch controls, hands-free Siri and easy switching between Apple devices. Plus, they offer up to six hours of battery life with ANC on and up to 30 hours with the charging case.   Externally, the AirPods Pro also have some perks worth mentioning. Each purchase comes with four silicone tips, ranging from extra small to large. The earbuds and t...

This case turns your Apple Watch into a tiny iPod

Image
C’mon, how cute is that. | Image: TinyPod If you’ve been feeling nostalgic for your old iPod lately, well, I have great news. TinyPod is a case you put on your Apple Watch — sans strap — so you can hold it and use it like your favorite vintage MP3 player. A $79 version includes a scroll wheel, which physically turns the watch’s digital crown. For $29, you can get a case without the scroll wheel and with a cutout so you can access the digital crown directly. But TinyPod could be more than just a way to turn your watch into a cute media player — it’s designed to make your watch a more capable companion to your phone. Recently, we’ve seen all kinds of gadgets and minimalist phones that promise to help you disconnect will still keeping you connected to the essentials. But largely,... The best Apple Watch deals for Amazon Prime Day

Image
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge The Apple Watch often sees its fair share of limited-time discounts throughout the year, but Amazon’s Prime Day offers a chance for someone to shop deals across most available models all at once. For this Prime Day, we’re seeing some worthwhile sales across the range of the 2022 Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 9, and even the pricey Apple Watch Ultra 2. Most of these require an Amazon Prime subscription, but Amazon’s excellent $100 discount on the Ultra 2 does not. While most Apple Watches are pretty similar at their core (iOS notifications on your wrist, fitness tracking, health metrics, etc.), it’s the extra features added or omitted from some models that often determines which is right for you — as well as your budget, of course.... Apple partners with leading chumbox provider to sell ads

Image
A chumbox pictured at the bottom of a story. | Screenshot: The Verge Taboola, one of the biggest providers of chumbox ads on the internet, has a deal to sell ads that will show in Apple’s News and Stocks apps, Axios reports. Apple lists Taboola as one of its “Authorised advertising resellers” whose ads appear in the apps’ feeds and “select publisher articles” for users in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada. The deal doesn’t mean Apple News will soon be littered with chumboxes — those ad boxes formatted to look like news stories that you see at the bottom of articles (including at The Verge) with low-rent, often ridiculous clickbait headlines. Taboola makes those, and they apparently do quite well. But it also sells “native” ads, which are meant to blend in with surrounding content, from “a curated set of... Prime Day 2024: Save 22 percent on Logitech keyboards, mice and other computer accessories

Amazon Prime Day is here, and it has brought deals on some of our favorite brands' devices. Take the rose-colored Logitech Pebble 2 Combo, down to $47 from $60 — a 22 percent discount. This record-low price gets you the Pebble Mouse 2 M350s and Pebble Keys 2 K380s. You can also pick the set up in black or white, but it will cost you another three dollars.  The Logitech Pebble 2 Combo is a great option if you want a solid, reliable keyboard and mouse. I personally own the keyboard and find it very comfortable to use — though it's definitely on the smaller side, so you might prefer taking it out for travel. The wireless keyboard should hold about three years of battery life, while the mouse should last about two years. You can connect up to three wireless devices across operating systems and toggle between them with a switch button. Plus, you can customize the Fn keys for commands like search and screen capture. There are a bunch of other Logitech keyboards, mice and other ...

The best Prime Day deals under $25

Amazon Prime Day is a chance for Prime members to pick up all sorts of things on sale, and while most of the discounts aren't worth your time, those on gadgets actually can be. If any of the items on your list happen to be tech or tech related, Engadget has you covered. We’ve scoured Amazon to find the Prime Day deals on tech and gadgets that you can get this year. And the good news is that not all of the discounts are on high-priced items. Yes, you can actually pick up good tech during this sale without spending a fortune. When we scour the web for deals, we’re looking not only for the best prices possible, but also the best products as well. Our goal with our deals coverage, es...
